All of these books are so copy and paste at this point。 I'm glad we get to bring back people from old books and see more of them, but the adventures seem very sameish。 All of these books are so copy and paste at this point。 I'm glad we get to bring back people from old books and see more of them, but the adventures seem very sameish。 。。。more

Each famous five book had the potent capacity to give serious goosebumps。 Each brought its own unique plot, twists, and storylines that kept you hooked。 Undoubtedly the best of Enid Blyton。

REREADThis is one of the only Famous Five books I read as a child; as an introduction to the series, I recall enjoying it a lot! I remember mostly the beginning; probably because our characters were established and the introduction of Berta gave the readers and the Five a blank canvas for their latest adventure。The premise is fun, a perfect childhood thrill with equal amounts mystery, danger and of course incompetent adults。 I mean, they are ridiculously so but not in a likeable or comical way e REREADThis is one of the only Famous Five books I read as a child; as an introduction to the series, I recall enjoying it a lot! I remember mostly the beginning; probably because our characters were established and the introduction of Berta gave the readers and the Five a blank canvas for their latest adventure。The premise is fun, a perfect childhood thrill with equal amounts mystery, danger and of course incompetent adults。 I mean, they are ridiculously so but not in a likeable or comical way either。 Joan is perhaps the only adult in this story that has any merit, still she serves only as convenience character。 This comes to my main issue with this particular book in the series。 I don’t know if it’s true of all the books; but the treatment of female characters in this is overwhelmingly disappointing。 I can allow passes for the time this was written, however nearly all the females in this are mere surface level characters with hardly any agency at all。 George, my favourite by far, is kidnapped and is therefore absent for the majority of this book。 Aunt Fanny and the literal hell of a character that is Uncle Quentin also exit the story early on, as does Berta, who is passed from place to place throughout。 This leaves us Joan, Anne and Jo。 The former is a likeable and relatable adult, though her position in the book becomes what should’ve been Aunt Fanny, only with added subservience to the Five as their housemaid。 She does not make decisions but takes orders from Julian and Dick, whilst cooking breakfast and fretting。 Anne practically disappears! It’s laughable that in a story about the Famous Five, Anne is sidelined repeatedly and opts out to helping Joan with the housework and sleeping, rather than rescuing George。 Jo’s mischievous actions prove her to have the most agency of the female characters and she’s very likeable in this novel - however she is constantly discouraged by the Five (namely Julian and Dick) when her involvement is no longer necessary to the plot。 She continues to do what she wants and becomes a major part in this story。 Her disobedience adds to her personality, however described as a Gypsy, she is still a lower status female and this is repeated throughout the book。Essentially, this story is the Dick and Julian show。 Even Timmy the dog features more in this than two of the supposed ‘Five’; and sadly throughout this story the representation of women is continually diminished, subservient or completely absent。 Not one I’d be quick to share with young children。 。。。more

Plus if you've protection a child from potential kidnap it's probably best not to head off and leave them behind。Also, I've said it before, but I really think Quentin needs to think about security for his (widely-varying) important work。 。。。more

Gosh, I had to read this book three times because in the first two times when I read it, I ABSOLUTELY COULDN'T, understand the radius of miles as I am 7 years old and that was until in the third my aunt explained some parts of the book which I didn't understand so I had to give this book only four stars。 Gosh, I had to read this book three times because in the first two times when I read it, I ABSOLUTELY COULDN'T, understand the radius of miles as I am 7 years old and that was until in the third my aunt explained some parts of the book which I didn't understand so I had to give this book only four stars。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Well, there may be six children and two dogs, they may not have fun all the time, but it is a nice little romp。We have science secrets, mistaken identities, kidnapping, travelling folk being baddies, police not being helpful, a break in to a mysterious house by the children, Julian being far too heavy handed and indulged in this, and another cross dressing girl (although this one isn't thrilled with the cross dressing)。 Very little sailing or Kirren Island and no caves so we don't tick every box Well, there may be six children and two dogs, they may not have fun all the time, but it is a nice little romp。We have science secrets, mistaken identities, kidnapping, travelling folk being baddies, police not being helpful, a break in to a mysterious house by the children, Julian being far too heavy handed and indulged in this, and another cross dressing girl (although this one isn't thrilled with the cross dressing)。 Very little sailing or Kirren Island and no caves so we don't tick every box。 Jo makes her third appearance and is banned from helping, so does anyway and saves the day。 Again。 。。。more

George's father is working on a new project and it includes another American scientist。 Juluan, Dick and Anne are at Kirrin cottage with George and Timmy when they get to know that they have visitors from America。 Soon they hear another news, the American scientist's daughter Berta is to stay with them because the scientist has heard rumour that his daughter might be kidnapped and he might have to reveal the details of the experiment。 Uncle Quentin agrees to have Berta with them。 They cut her ha George's father is working on a new project and it includes another American scientist。 Juluan, Dick and Anne are at Kirrin cottage with George and Timmy when they get to know that they have visitors from America。 Soon they hear another news, the American scientist's daughter Berta is to stay with them because the scientist has heard rumour that his daughter might be kidnapped and he might have to reveal the details of the experiment。 Uncle Quentin agrees to have Berta with them。 They cut her hair and calm her Leslie。 Berta has a dog Sally who has taken a liking to Timmy。 All this annoys George。One night George tries to lock Berta's dog downstairs as she was anmoyed by it, when she is kidnapped, thinking she was Berta, since the kidnappers were looking for a girl dressed up as a boy! Julian and Dick with the help of Jo help rescue George who was kidnapped and held hostage at a house, by a circus company head Gringo who worked with an American。My thoughts:Not a great Famous Five book because it was boring。 Not that great adventure。 Most of the time they were making fun of how Berta was saying the word twenty and wonderful in her American accent。 Most of the time George was angry and fighting。Logical Issues:How Quentin and Aunt Fanny leave the kids with Joanna and go off just like that when there is a threat of kidnapping going on。Secondly, how calm and composed they are about George being kidnapped。 。。。more

I had missed reading Famous Five 14, 15 and 20 during my school days。 So I thought how would I feel reading a Famous Five now。Well, I don't know if it's this book or it's me, but couldn't enjoy this one much。 They don't have much of an adventure in this book and most of the time they are fighting with this new American girl called Berta。 But I want to believe I didn't pick up a good Famous Five book rather than think I'm too old for this series because most of my school days were colourful becau I had missed reading Famous Five 14, 15 and 20 during my school days。 So I thought how would I feel reading a Famous Five now。Well, I don't know if it's this book or it's me, but couldn't enjoy this one much。 They don't have much of an adventure in this book and most of the time they are fighting with this new American girl called Berta。 But I want to believe I didn't pick up a good Famous Five book rather than think I'm too old for this series because most of my school days were colourful because I could read an Enid Blyton book。 Miss those days ☹! 。。。more

A blast from the past for me。 I’ve had this book since I was 10 (15 years ago) and never finished it so I decided to pick it back up。 Enjoyable read!

Another one of my faves in the series and one I was glad to get to again。 It was nice to have Jo pop up once more (the final time I think??) and actually have another book set at Kirrin。

Not as exciting as some of the others。 The 'adventure', if you could call it that was a thing of nothing。 It happened and ended in a couple of pages。 Most of the book was about them spending the hols on the beach and as usual, what they ate and where。 I've realised rereading these that the earlier books were definitely the best。 This one could almost have been written by anyone。 Was a bit flat for me。 Not as exciting as some of the others。 The 'adventure', if you could call it that was a thing of nothing。 It happened and ended in a couple of pages。 Most of the book was about them spending the hols on the beach and as usual, what they ate and where。 I've realised rereading these that the earlier books were definitely the best。 This one could almost have been written by anyone。 Was a bit flat for me。 。。。more
